Sometimes the places that will do your love story justice can only be described as otherworldly. So you have to travel to a picturesque location that will be on par with that moment. A place where it can be just the two of you, in nature, promising forever to each other. And of course, getting beautiful images of every special second. Such as an Iceland elopement? Exactly!
We are here to talk about this beautiful Iceland elopement.
It’s a tale as old as time. A couple met, fell in love, and promised each other forever in front of an Icelandic waterfall.
Meet Gavin and Marie! Gavin is from my favorite state, Utah. And Marie is from Canada. Watching two individuals from very different places coming together as one life story is a rather lovely experience.
Now Marie and Decoy, (her precious german pointer puppy) are moving to Utah to live with Gavin!
Their Iceland elopement is a true happily ever after. And I can’t wait to help others have their version of this happily ever after too.
Now, Gavin and Marie eloped in late fall/almost winter.
Because of this, I picked up on a few winter Iceland elopement tips! And I’m sharing them with you.
So let’s talk pros and cons of eloping in the winter in Iceland. Such as the differences during this time of year because of the weather changes.
It’s a pretty known fact that winter in Iceland is over-the-top amazing!
Since this isn’t the most popular season, it’s quieter in terms of bustling crowds. It usually has average temperatures around 32°F (so great for all the snow activities) AND it’s one of the better places/times to see the Northern lights!
Iceland is all around one of the best places to see the northern lights in the world! The aurora borealis are even said to appear in a greater variety of colors here.
The northern lights can be seen in pale green and pink. Sometimes you’ll see hues of violet, red, yellow, and blue, covering the sky in various shapes. You can see them as drapes across the vast sky. Painting the night sky in translucent patterns, patches of saturated color. Or shooting into the sky as colorful rays of light.
The northern lights alone are enough reason to have a winter Iceland elopement, but they sure aren’t the only reason!
Another one of my favorite reasons is the vastly different landscapes. The variety is astounding. Everything from the beautiful snow-capped mountains to the impossibly real ice caves. You can elope in front of all the glaciers you could imagine or on the black sand beaches. And that’s not even half of the beauty available in Iceland for your elopement.
But, while Iceland may not be the coldest of the northern countries, it’s still cold! So it’s important to consider this.
Often you’ll find that’s it’s very windy and snowy or rainy. And you will also find that the amount of daylight you will get is very short this time of year! And the overcast days are much more common during the winter months.
So when eloping it’s essential to come prepared to brave the elements!
How so? Well, pack according to the weather! Such as warm wool layers and some nice warm dress coats. Don’t forget to bring the hats and gloves that you will like to be photographed in.
You’ll need other necessities like winter boots and hand warmers! And don’t forget to bring some hot water for tea or hot cocoa to warm you up from the inside out.
Here is one big thing to keep in mind when planning your elopement timeline. You will need time to warm up between locations! (Like in the car or your lodging.)
And I’d like to share one last tip for you before you enjoy the beautiful Iceland elopement below!
Remember that the days are shorter during the winter. Because of this, there is less time for driving to locations while the light is out. So traveling before and/or after the sun goes up (or down!) is very helpful.
Pro tip: Rent an Airbnb, a guest house, or a lodge. That way you will have a place to stay for all the celebrations after the sunset! It’s an amazing game changer.
And that is all folks!
